Finasteride (INN, USAN, BAN) (brand names Proscar, and Propecia by Merck, among other generic names; former developmental code name MK-906) is a drug used for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and male pattern baldness (MPB). It is a type II and type III 5a-reductase inhibitor; 5a-reductase, an enzyme, converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
